Several poker pros had success on Day 20 of the 2011 PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker. WSOP bracelet winner Joe “ender555″ Ebanks added a WCOOP bracelet to his wrist by winning the $1,000 Limit Hold’em event, and Steve “HR_Dub” Williams took down the $500 Cubed event for a massive payday of $172,674.

Fabrizio “SixthSenSe19″ Gonzalez, who won his first WCOOP title last year, had a shot at two more on Friday. He found himself playing two final tables at the same time but came up short in both, taking fifth place in Event #55 and fourth place in Event #57. Still, his exceptional day netted him more than $63,000 in earnings and a shot at WCOOP Player of the Year.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid reportedly told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that Internet poker legislation “will get done.” This is the first time the Nevada senator has spoken so assuredly about the future of online poker. Whether Reid’s prediction happens sooner rather than later likely will depend on the debt super committee.

The joint select committee on deficit reduction has been tasked with finding at least $1.5 trillion in debt savings over the next 10 years. Licensing and regulating Internet poker is a way the committee could identify billions of dollars with little effort.

“I think there’s a very good chance we’re going to get in the discussion,” Poker Players Alliance executive director John Pappas said about online poker. “Whether it makes it into the final recommendation is the question.”

The super committee is a result of the Budget Control Act of 2011, the debt-ceiling agreement signed into law by President Obama on Aug. 2. The law created the bipartisan committee, which has been called super because it has the unprecedented authority to craft a bill that may not be amended or filibustered. The bill, as written by the committee, will get a majority vote in the Senate and House. If passed, it will go to President Obama for final approval.

If online poker is put on the bill by the committee, it is there to stay. Whether or not the bill passes will have little to do with poker and be all about politics, but poker will be along for the ride. If poker is put on the bill, the second hurdle will be for the committee itself to come to an agreement. With six Democrats and six Republicans, the committee will be in a 6-6 deadlock unless at least one member is willing to break party lines. The 12 members were picked by the leadership of their party, presumably with loyalty in mind.

The 12 members are Democratic Sens. Patty Murray (Wash.), Max Baucus (Mont.) and John F. Kerry (Mass.), Republican Sens. Jon Kyl (Ariz.), Rob Portman (Ohio) and Patrick J. Toomey (Pa.), Democratic Reps. James Clyburn (S.C.), Xavier Becerra (Calif.) and Chris Van Hollen (Md.), and Republican Reps. Dave Camp (Mich.), Jeb Hensarling (Texas) and Fred Upton (Mich.).

The lineup doesn’t give particular reason for optimism on poker’s prospects. Upton, Clyburn, Becerra and Van Hollen all have grades of “B” in the PPA’s congressional ratings, Kyl and Camp have grades of “F,” and the rest are unknowns.

“The people holding the cards I think will be Kyl and Reid,” Pappas said. “Even though Reid is not on the commission, he appointed people who are. If Kyl and Reid can compromise on a deal to include online poker, I think it can happen. It’s handing Congress revenue without raising taxes, which is exactly what they’re looking for.”

Day 7 of the 2011 World Series of Poker saw a bracelet awarded in the $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball event. Also, the money bubble was reached in the $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em event and a massive chip leader emerged. Finally, both the $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em Six-Max and $10,000 Omaha Hi-Lo World Championships got under way with the six-max shattering last year’s attendance.

Event #8: $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em

Day 2 play in the $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em event saw the weekend fields combine, bringing together 623 players for the march to the final table. First, the money bubble had to be burst, and Nick Gibson was the unfortunate bubble boy for the event. He was all-in with pocket nines and David Rood made the call with {a-}{k-}. Gibson faded the flop, but a {k-} on the turn put Rood in the lead. Another king on the river sealed the deal and the remaining 423 players were in the money. Among the notables cashing in the event were Valdemar Kwaysser, Dan Heimiller, 2011 WSOP Circuit National Champion Sam Barnhart, Vitaly Lunkin, and Kathy Liebert.

Jon Turner will take a massive chip lead into Day 3 play. He currently holds 749,000 in chips and the next closest player, Kyle Speake, has 573,000. Sixty players remain and a bracelet is scheduled to be awarded in this event on Tuesday.

The high-stakes online action has been pretty uneventful over the past week. The biggest winner of the midweek was “FinnishNightmre,” who played 1,857 hands spread across 25 sessions and pocketed $106,997. Right on his heels was a familiar name, Gus Hansen, who won $97,080 in eight sessions consisting of 954 hands.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Patrik Antonius had a terrible midweek and was far the biggest loser. He dropped $192,586 in only three sessions spanning 250 hands. He lost nearly four times as much as the next guy on the list, which happened to be “insyder19.”, who lost a modest $59,268 over on PokerStars. Here is a look at a few of the more notable hands from the midweek.

Antonius vs. Hansen

On Tuesday, Antonius and Hansen played heads-up $500/$1,000 pot-limit Omaha on Full Tilt Poker. In one of the larger hands, Antonius ($124,501.50) raised to $3,000 on the button, Hansen ($85,462.50) made it $9,000 to go from the big blind, and Antonius made the call. When the flop fell , Hansen led out for $8,000, Antonius called, and the hit the turn.

Both players ended up checking and watched the peel off on the river. Again, Hansen checked, but this time Antonius fired out $34,000. Hansen made the call but could only muck when Antonius rolled over for a flush. While Antonius did not fare well overall in the match, he did manage to take down this $102,000 pot.

Hansen Flops a Set

In another hand between the two, Antonius ($117,993.50) was on the button and made it $3,000 to go. Hansen ($91,984.50) opted to exercise his option in the big blind with a re-raise to $9,000, which Antonius called. After the flop came down , Hansen bet $8,000, Antonius raised to $42,000, and Hansen moved all-in for $82,984.50. Antonius called and the cards were turned up.

Antonius:
Hansen:

Antonius had flopped two pair with a straight redraw but was well behind the bottom set and same straight redraw of Hansen. The turn and river were run twice, but neither the / on the first run nor the / on the second changed a thing. Hansen’s set held and he took down a pot worth $183,969.

Monster $347K Pot

The size of this pot was remarkable, especially considering that it was played at the $300/$600 PLO tables. It was played on Tuesday between Hansen ($197,012.50) and “DrugsOrMe” ($173,765.50) and began with the former on the button. He raised to $2,000, DrugsOrMe called, and the ran out on the flop. DrugsOrMe check-called a bet of $4,200 and then checked the turn. Hansen fired out $12,600, DrugsOrMe called, and the appeared on the river.

The pot was modest up until this point, but that all changed when DrugsOrMe checked, Hansen bet $37,800, DrugsOrMe check-raised to $111,000, and Hansen moved all-in for $178,112.50. DrugsOrMe called off his remaining $43,965.50 and flipped over for the nut straight. Wouldn’t you know it, Hansen revealed for the same straight. We know it’s mean to build up all this suspense only to have it be a split pot, but it was so big we thought we’d write about it anyway.

Who’s Up? Who’s Down?

Week’s biggest winners (5/3-5/5): FinnishNightmre (+$106,997), Gus Hansen (+$97,080), O Fortuna PLS (+$62,204)

Week’s biggest losers: Patrik Antonius (-$192,586), *insyder19 (-$59,268), Himan33 (-$58,486)

The future of the CEREUS Network sites UB.com and Absolute Poker appear to be in question. According to information obtained by Poker News Daily, the two USA-friendly sites will continue to allow existing USA players to fire up the virtual felts and play as normal. However, for the foreseeable future, they will be unable to deposit, withdraw, or transfer their funds. No official statement from either site has been released.

UB.com has now become UBPoker.eu, while AbsolutePoker.com has transformed into AbsolutePoker.eu. The moves follow a similar one from PokerStars, which ditched its seized dot-com site for PokerStars.eu, which is a mirror of the old site. Full Tilt Poker is now accessible through FullTiltPoker.co.uk, while a dot-org site also exists, which is also apparently a valid Full Tilt domain.read more
